CRAFT Defensive Tactics Program: A Cost Effective Means of Liability Mitigation

Defensive Tactics is a low-frequency/high liability skill set. This skill is also among the most rapidly diminishing skills that officers receive and it is usually one of the least frequent training activities conducted.

The first step in liability mitigation is to conduct continual and ongoing training. Finding time and resources to dedicate to training is challenging to say the least. Because this program is in a POST-Approved format it can be divided into short training sessions that are conducive to squad room briefing. Your in-house instructor can easily conduct and document an ongoing training program.

Conventional defensive tactics programs provide officers with an onslaught and an overload of individual techniques that the officer is incapable of recalling under stress. This leads to an emotionally charged officer whose reaction is outside of departmental training and guidelines and incongruent with organizational values.

Principles of Crisis Response III: Effective Leadership When It Counts

Principles of Crisis Response III prepares command personnel for pre-planning a response to and managing a large-scale event. This will be an interactive and participative experience. The participant will experience, in tabletop format, the command and control of a large-scale, sustained operational response to a mass-casualty event. Topics to be addressed included first responders and realistic expectations, media relations, dissemination of information, inter-disciplinary cooperation and communication, sustainability of operations, and resource coordination.

All-Hazards Response Planning and Preparation

We can help you with the development, training, implementation, and execution of an 'All Hazards-Operational Response Plan.'  The principles of planning, prevention, and preparation for mass casualty events are multidisciplinary and, as such, applicable to a multitude of events.

A customized plan will provide a scalable template for a cohesive organizational response to a variety of incidents, emergencies or disasters ranging from a) less serious, more internal day-to-day emergencies that can occur any time (like a fire, a power outage, a congregant getting sick, equipment failure, etc.) or b) an incident that requires coordination with individuals and organizations outside the confines of the primary location (i.e. tornado, large-scale, long-term power outage, etc.) that will require significant coordination as well as an Active Shooter Response Plan.

Any operational plan and training are destined to fail if the administrative and leadership component is not wholly aligned and prepared to integrate at every level. Even indirect or widespread events can have a cumulative effect on your organization, employees, and your customers. It is crucial that you have an organizational response plan that is developed solely and specifically to address your needs.

If your organization assumes a functional responsibility for incident management as a response for an in-house organizational crisis or as a change agent for sister organizations, the development of a comprehensive plan will provide for a response mechanism to internal needs/threats and will also better enable you to integrate with local, state, and federal response mechanisms.

We integrate the FEMA-Incident Command System (ICS) into a comprehensive plan to ensure a proportional response to incidents. An organization must be forward-looking in all matters. A critical incident may have an extensive peripheral effect on the basic day-to-day infrastructure that attendees, congregants, employees, and the community all rely upon. The participation of key administrative staff is crucial, as it will ensure the clarity of the vision and increase the probability of the plan's successful execution.

Building Clearing/Active Shooter

The objectives of this course are to familiarize the student with patrol response to active shooter/threat incidents, building clearing, and other high-stress incidents.  This will be a hands-on training course that will include force-on-force scenarios.  At the end of the course, the student will be able to effectively function as a single officer responder to an active threat event or coordinate a team to build clearing or respond to an active threat event. Students will review recent active threat incidents, and these events will be discussed on a tabletop. The objectively reasonable force will be discussed, particularly as it relates to distinguishing an active threat from a static event, hostage/armed, and barricaded events that may be/become static. There will be a discussion of the dynamics of action versus reaction as it pertains to hostage rescue and active threat circumstances; specifically, there are dangers posed to citizens and officers when issuing verbal warnings. The concept of "opportunity cost" will be discussed.

Emotional Intelligence: A Paradigm Shift in Police Training

The role of emotional intelligence in police behavior has been neglected if not entirely ignored. Other disciplines involving high-stakes human performance, such as elite athletes and stellar-performing global executives, are heavily reliant upon and are highly competent in social-emotional intelligence.

Years of discourse and volumes of literature regarding police performance, when examined and summarized collectively, speak to physiological arousal as the primary contribution to performance issues. They offer little more insight into the root cause of failure during the police-to-citizen interpersonal exchange. This deficit results in literary distortion and amplification of physiological arousal as the causal agent in police-citizen conflict.

When an officer perceives the absence of another person's caring, respect, or valuing, they may experience a feeling of impotence or powerlessness, and this can unnecessarily place the officer on the offensive. This emotional volatility results in tactical blindness and deteriorates our interactions with the citizens.

A curriculum that imparts principle/value-based decision-making, integrated with social-emotional learning, develops officers who are self-aware and self-managing: the epitome of a professional. The byproduct and added value of this comprehensive understanding of self is enhanced conflict mediation/resolution as well as the development of leadership traits that will contribute to organizational health.

People who are experts in their field can be prone to an exaggerated sense of how well we understand the world. Research demonstrates that we have two systems available for making decisions, and under uncertain conditions, we do not behave in the way that economic models have traditionally assumed—we do not "maximize utility."

We have a slow, deliberate, analytical, and consciously effortful mode of reasoning about the world, and in contrast, it is our fast, automatic, intuitive, and largely unconscious mode. There are unconscious errors of reasoning that distort our judgment; these are cognitive biases.

Participants will obtain a clearer vision of flawed human reason, and they will learn very specific steps to reduce overconfidence. They will learn to be more analytical, more vigilant, and more able to question.

Conventional problem-solving or drill-down skills tend not to address human cognitive flaws. This permits intuitive conclusions based on a heuristic rather than scrutinized logic, perpetuating our tendency to overestimate benefits and underestimate costs. This course is a foundation for loss and risk mitigation—a crucial and required executive skill.

There is a sharp contrast between respect-based and shame-based personal and organizational behavior. If you have ever observed the sort of fight that seemed to exist for its own sake rather than for the resolution of difference, then you have witnessed a shame-based transaction.

A respect-based system is one in which "patterns of interaction are based upon accepting people as they are—not as they should be—open communication, and accountability will fall on the respectful end of the continuum and, in general, will have more fulfilled and emotionally well members."
